The Law of Unintended Consequenses

Foxnews.com has a frightening parable about the law of unintended consequences.

What’s that you say?  It’s really happening?  Oh, dear.

When you try and change behavior, new behavior will occur.  It may not be better.  Someone told me yesterday that when he had gastric bypass, they told him that many people are compulsive eaters.  The bypass takes that away.  So you will compulsively do something else.  It may be good – like cleaning.  It may be bad, like smoking, or worse.

Welfare was passed to help unwed mothers, who struggled.  What happened?  Well, if you pay people to be unwed mothers, you will get more of them.

What unintended consequences will we find in 1000 pages of unread rules regarding our health care?  Only positive, I am certain.

What unintended consequences will we have in re-writing our synod constitution?  Only positive, I am certain.

It turns out, the only worse than doing nothing, is doing something.
